NBA superstar Kobe Bryant of the 2009 NBA Champions, Los Angeles Lakers, attended the first charity event of his China fund in Beijing on Monday.

Bryant has made many trips to China on behalf of his sponsor, Nike, and these visits have endeared him to the Chinese public. However, Monday's event in Beijing is different. Bryant is assuming another identity, i.e., a philanthropist.

On Monday afternoon, Bryant took part in his China charity tour luncheon sponsored by China Soong Ching-Ling Foundation (CSCLF) at the China World Hotel and accepted private donation letters from various enterprises.

Early on June 30, 2009 in Los Angeles, US, the CSCLF and the Kobe Bryant Family Foundation signed an agreement to establish the Kobe China Fund.

The fund will support education, sports and culture programs for children from both China and the US. It will also work to establish basketball schools in urban and rural areas to cultivate young basketball players in an effort to promote the development of China's basketball. The Kobe China Fund has so far raised 42 million yuan (about 6.15 million US dollars).

Later in this evening's charity event, the Kobe China Fund will announce its first donation to children in quake hit Sichuan province.

Bryant will conclude his China tour and fly back to the US on Tuesday.
