--"Forever Peace" Charity Sale Held at the Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling

January 27th, 2008 marked the 115th anniversary of the birth of Soong Ching Ling(SCL), the Late Honorary President of the People's Republic of China. On the special day in the past, the Former Residence of SCL was open free of charge and people came to the Residence to pay their respects to the great woman of the 20th centaury with flowers brought themselves or provided by the Residence at the gate. This year, the Residence has not only kept its tradition, but also held a "charity sale" of "Forever Peace" blue-and-white porcelain vases to raise fund for the project of "Safety for Mothers and Infants", so as to carry on SCL's words "A strong nation starts with the building of a strong social welfare system for women and children".

At 10 o'clock in the morning, Yu Guilin and Chi Liqun, vice chairpersons of China Soong Ching Ling Foundation(CSCLF), friends of Soong's family, representatives of donors and hundreds of visitors presented with flowers and paid their tributes to her in front of her statue. After the ceremony, the charity sale started. At the sale, two enterprises donated and many visitors followed the suit. All the proceeds from the donation will be used for the project of "Safety for Mothers and Infants". Yu Guilin, vice chairman presented the "Forever Peace" blue-and-white porcelain vases to the donors as commemorations. These vases were jointly designed and produced by Wang Xiliang, Wang Enhuai and Xiong Gangru, Chinese masters of arts and crafts. These vases are valuable for collections as they were produced only with a limited number of 2008. The vases have been presented to those countries that once held the Olympic Games in history.

The project was jointly initiated by CSCLF and China Welfare Institute (CWI) in 2001. Its objectives are to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates and improve the medical and health conditions in the poverty-stricken areas in western China. CSCLF and CWI have inputed RMB10 million Yuan, (about $1.3 million US Dollars) to the project. It has set up 17 healthcare centers, provided with 318 pieces of medical equipment, trained about 3,000 medical workers and sponsored over 1000 pregnant women to have children deliveries free in hospitals in western China.

SCL was an initiator and the great practitioner for women and children's welfare undertakings in China. Early in 1951, SCL was honored with a title of Stalin International Peace Prize and awarded with 100, 000 Russian Rubles. She made her understood that the money must be used for the benefits of women and children. Therefore, the International Peace Maternity and Child Health Hospital (IPMCHH) was built. This was a great move for new China at that time.
To carry forward her unfinished work, the foundation has devoted itself to the work of children's health, education and social welfare since its founding in 1982.
