1st Int'l Conference on Autism Therapy and Rehabilitation Held in Beijing

Dr. Helen Mccabe on Special Education and International Education from Indiana University, USA, and researcher of Hussman Autism Research Institute, introduces the development of autism rehabilitation technology and the treatment of autism children in the USA.

Hosted by China Soong Ching Ling Foundation (CSCLF), and organized by Beijing Star Hope Autism Rehabilitation Center, the First International Conference on Autism Therapy and Rehabilitation kicked off in Beijing on September 23, 2015. It aimed to improve the research level of autism rehabilitation technology in China, and explore the development mode of autism rehabilitation technology that suits China's national conditions.

Autism is also called autism disorder. It is a disease that has not found the cause, and has no medicines to cure. Study showed that highly intensive and scientific rehabilitation training could inspire the potentials of autism patients, and help them integrate into the society. It's known that there are over 1.6 million autism patients in China, and the number of patients has been increasing in recent years. The rehabilitation of autism has already become a social problem.

Professor Michael Keenan from the Psychology School of the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, introduces the history and development of autism.

Ma Tinghui, honorary chairwoman of China Association of Persons with Intellectual Disability and Their Relatives, introduces the development of autism rehabilitation technologies in China.

Since CSCLF established the Autism Special Fund in 2015, the foundation has collected fund to support rehabilitation research on autism, establish activity places for autism children, build the research exchange platform, and care for autism children through social public funding. The conference is the first international conference about the rehabilitation technologies in the autism field in China. Through exchanging the latest research results and rehabilitation technology developments on autism among different countries, it will promote the exchange of advanced rehabilitation experiences in both China and foreign countries, and explore the road of autism rehabilitation that combines medical treatment, education, and social service. It will also promote the understanding and attention of the whole world and the whole society to autism, and improve the research level of related rehabilitation technology.

Bao Peide, vice chairman of CSCLF, said: "Holding the first conference on autism therapy and rehabilitation in China, is the new effort, exploration and break through of CSCLF in this field. We'll pay more attention to autism, and give more care to autism children and families with autism children. The original intention of this charity activity is to carry out the wish of Madame Soong Ching-ling through practical action –'provide the most precious to children'."

Ma Tinghui, honorary chairwoman of China Association of Persons with Intellectual Disability and Their Relatives, delivered a keynote speech. She said: "The key point in autism rehabilitation is the development of autism therapy and rehabilitation technology. China should develop the rehabilitation technology that suits its national conditions." She introduced the latest technology in China, the MUST Autism Rehabilitation Therapy. It was proposed by Du Jiamei, founder of Beijing Star Hope Autism Rehabilitation Center, and vice chairperson of the Autism Committee of China Association of Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons (CARD).

Deputy Professor Lv Xiaotong on Childhood Education, Teikyo University of Science & Technology, introduces the development of autism rehabilitation technology and the treatment of autism children in Japan.

The conference lasted for 4 days. It invited many top experts and scholars to attend from the USA, UK, Japan, the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. Professor Michael Keenan from the Psychology School of the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, Dr. Helen Mccabe on Special Education and International Education from Indiana University, USA, and Dr. Lv Xiaotong on Pedagogy Research from Tokyo Gakugei University, Japan, delivered excellent speeches, introducing the autism rehabilitation technology development and the treatment of autism children in developed oversea countries. Participants further communicated and discussed the effective autism therapies and many advanced technologies. Staff members from the Ministry of Education, the National Health and Family Planning Commission and China Disabled Persons Federation also attended in the conference.

The team that produced "Let Love Fly Together", a song about autism, brought their song to the conference, which enlivened the conference.

The conference called on people from all circles of society to take action to care for autism patients, and be supportive and cooperative in participating in the treatment of autism. It hoped that under the efforts of these commissions, the development and research on autism therapies and rehabilitation will become flourish, and autism children can receive better rehabilitation service.
