Starbucks Youth Leadership Development Program Held in 5 Cities

The first training and road performance activity of Starbucks Youth Leadership Development Program were held in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Changsha, and Chengdu from March 19 to 27. 99 teams formed by over 500 students from 10 universities planned 99 public welfare projects under the themes of caring for old people, left-behind children, special groups, community service and green environment protection. The event included course training on leadership and public welfare, experience trips to Starbucks outlets, and road performance activities displaying self-designed public welfare projects.

The training included 6 sections: culture and leadership of Starbucks company, my story with Starbucks, the public welfare situation in China and the world, designing a public welfare project, transparent operation and financial management of public welfare projects, as well as typical case analysis.

99 student teams displayed their self-designed public welfare projects in road performance activities, which were the significant part of the event. The judges were deeply impressed by students' creativity. They said students had a sharp view of angle, saw social problems, used professional background to solve problems, and promoted their ideas through new media, which made people feel the broad perspectives of young people in the public welfare course.

The event combined the public welfare activities of university students with leadership training, improved students' enthusiasm and participation, and offered a platform for young people to explore and innovate public welfare activities. Students improved their abilities and confidence in the activities, and undertook their responsibilities to the society.

Student public welfare project one: paper-cutting activities for empty nesters.

Students organized the activity to teach empty nesters paper cutting, which passed down the traditional Chinese culture, as well as promoted to solve the empty nester problem.

Student public welfare project two: zero distance with AIDS knowledge.

The project aimed to promote AIDS prevention conceptions to university students, help them understand the disease, prevent the disease effectively, reduce the source of infection, and slow down the spreading speed of the disease in China.

Student public welfare project three: friendship meals.

Advocate old people to have meals with young people to offer a solution to the aging society.

Student public welfare project four: please the guests in Guangzhou.

Use community university to teach Cantonese and cultural experiencing lessons, which helped migrant workers understand and integrate in Guangzhou.

Young people started to pay attention to the problems and groups neglected by the society, and changed from sympathy to continuous thinking and actions. The program hoped to improve young people's career ability, communicating and cooperative ability, as well as the sense of social responsibility through their training.

Background information:

The Starbucks Youth Leadership Development Program was a talent-training plan launched by China Soong Ching Ling Foundation, Starbucks Coffee Company and Give2Asia, targeting at Chinese university students. It aims to train students' career ability, communicating and cooperative ability, as well as the sense of social responsibility. During the second phase of the program, students pay attention to meaningful social problems, change from bystanders to participants, and design a public welfare project. After students finish investigation and analysis of the project, project instructors from 20 professional organizations will offer lectures on leadership and public welfare, and instruct the projects. Through training and practice, the students get improved.

There are 10 universities participating in the second phase of the program: Tongji University, Shanghai University, South China Normal University, South China Agriculture University, Beijing Hospitality Institute, Beijing Professional Business Institute, Southwest University of Nationalities, Chengdu Institute of Sichuan International Studies University, Hunan University of Commerce, and Hunan City University.
